Did you know that the foods you eat and drink can have a significant influence on your bladder as well as your overall health? In reality, certain meals can help prevent sickness while others can cause it.

People rarely discuss bladder health, although it affects everyone. The bladder is a hollow organ that retains urine and is located in the lower abdomen. Urine includes waste and surplus fluid that the body excretes after absorbing what it requires from what we eat and drink. Adults pass around a quart and a half of urine through their bladders and out of their bodies everyday.

The bladder changes as people age. On a sweltering day, an elderly man drinks water at a park. The bladder's elastic tissue may harden and become less supple. Because a less flexible bladder cannot store as much pee as previously, you may need to use the restroom more frequently. The bladder wall and pelvic floor muscles may weaken, making it difficult to completely empty the bladder and causing urine leakage.

While you can’t control everything that affects your bladder, here are 15 steps you can take to keep it as healthy as possible:

  1. Use the bathroom often and when needed.
  2. Be in a relaxed position while urinating.
  3. Take enough time to fully empty the bladder when urinating.
  4. Wipe from front to back after using the toilet.
  5. Urinate before and after sexual activity.
  6. Do pelvic floor muscle exercises.
  7. Wear cotton underwear and loose-fitting clothes.
  8. Exercise regularly.
  9. Keep a healthy weight
  10. Watch what you eat.
  11. Drink enough fluids, especially water.
  12. Limit alcohol and caffeine.
  13. Avoid constipation.
  14. Quit smoking.
  15. Know your medications.

Symptoms of a bladder problem may include:

  • Inability to hold urine or leaking urine
  • Needing to urinate more frequently or urgently
  • Cloudy urine
  • Blood in the urine
  • Pain or burning before, during, or after urinating
  • Trouble starting or having a weak stream while urinating
  • Trouble emptying the bladder

If you experience any of these symptoms, see your doctor. Bladder abnormalities can be treated with behavioural and lifestyle changes, exercises, drugs, surgery, or a combination of these and other therapies. A good and healthy diet is essential for bladder health as well as general wellness!
